Hands up if you love scripture?
(I love the idea of someone putting their hand up in the middle of a shop or library right now)
I’ve been a Christian for 5 years now and one of the best, and most challenging, parts of life with Jesus is digging into the Word.
There are some verses most people would recognise, even if they don’t do regular bible studies, or even go to church.
‘The classics’, as we’ll refer to them, are all over our Pinterest feeds. I’m talking about the Jeremiah 29:11’s and the John 3:16’s.
The best thing about the bible is that all of it is useful in some way…
2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
But I do think if we aren’t careful we can play it safe and surround ourselves with the parts of scripture we’re most familar with, the verses which feel comfortable because we’ve heard 50 sermons unpacking them.
Here are 5 verses which are lesser known but just as beautiful and worth memorising because they remind us of truth…
“You have been told, O man, what is good, and what the Lord requires of you: Only to do the right and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.”
“Look at the nations and watch– and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.”
“For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”
“God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ.”
1 THESSALONIANS 5:21
“hold on to what is good”
Little disclaimer: The best way to read the bible, is to read it. Posts like this are designed to highlight a few verses which are handy to reflect on but they are no substitute for sitting down and having alone time with God, reading whole stories and passages is far more rewarding than taking the odd verse out of context.
What verse have you come across lately that’s challenged or encouraged you in some way?
