You have a free afternoon. You want to create something, to really get stuck into a project and make something you’re proud of.
But there’s one problem…
You can’t think of anything to create.
We’ve all been in this position. Time on our hands, the desire to create but feeling stuck because nothing feels worth making, or original, or you couldn’t do it as well as that person on Pinterest.
When we fall into the trap of feeling like we lack talent or imagination, it’s time to get those creative juices flowing again.
Here are 5 ways to overcome your creative drought today…
TRY A NEW CRAFT
Often the best way to feel inspired is to try your hand at something completely new. It might feel a little out of your comfort zone but if you fancy a challenge, why not check out these fun DIY craft project ideas and learn a new skill.
GO SOMEWHERE BEAUTIFUL
Wandering around pretty gardens or buildings instead of actually working on your creative project might seem a bit counterproductive but bare with me. Often we can stare at the computer/ yarn/ inks/ paints expecting creativity to jump out and whack us in the head. But that’s just a waste of time. Why not get out of the house and find somewhere beautiful to explore? You’ll leave feeling refreshed, inspired and ready to get creating again!
LOOK FOR INSPIRATION ONLINE
I love being inspired by the incredible work of other artists and writers. I’m a part of some lovely facebook communities for bloggers and ETSY sellers and checking out the projects others are throwing themselves into often leaves me passionate about my own blog and ETSY shop.
Instagram is FULL of amazing creators. Pinterest is also a really fun resource because you can save the things that inspire you and come back to them later. Check out my craft inspiration board for some fun DIY craft projects that others have tried (feel free to contact me if you’re a crafter and would like to contribute to the board).
30 SECOND NONSENSE WRITING CHALLENGE
I took creative writing as a module at Uni for the last two years and one interesting tip that I’ve been told to combat writer’s block is to simply write. It sounds obvious right? But sometimes seeking perfection actually holds us back from doing anything. So grab some paper, set a timer and just write…anything. It can be nonsense. It doesn’t have to comply with any linguistic rules. Just go for it and see what comes out.
HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR SPACE?
If you’re stuck for creative ideas, a good place to start is with your own home. Do you have a room in your home is a little neglected? What can you do to brighten it up? I’ve recently started making Pom Pom wall decorations, which you can check out here, (apologies for the plug but gotta do what you gotta do 😉 ). I knew I wanted to brighten up my room in a personal and fun way and ended up attempting pom pom making. Now I can’t stop making them and some others have given my creations a home too, which is a great feeling!
I hope you found those tips useful. Do you have a way of combating a lack of creativity? I’d love to hear your advice 🙂
