You can’t be super all the time. Unless you’re a superhero. In which case. As you were.
As for the rest of you, I’m going to assume there’s been – or there will be – a time in your life when you’ve felt – or will feel like – the best version of yourself. You’re productive, you’ve been doing interesting things and socialising with interesting people and you’ve amazed, impressed and inspired those around you.
I’m also going to assume that you picture this ‘best version’ of yourself as super (why wouldn’t you, they sound great!) But ‘super you’ isn’t your everyday state, and if it is then GET OUT OF HERE! You’re making the rest of us feel bad!
I’m joking of course, because that person doesn’t exist. Everyone needs off days, off weeks, off months, even off years. And it’s nothing to get yourself down about. It’s not like ‘super you’ emerged and you hit your peak of super-y-ness (just go with it) and you will never be that productive or that inspiring ever again. Just because ‘super you’ takes a break doesn’t mean you’re going to plummet into ‘unproductive you’ forever.
Besides, ‘super you’ needs a break. If super was your default state, you’d be exhausted! You need to embrace your alter ego when you get that sudden worried sense of reduced super-y-ness (that’s right I used it twice). I say ‘alter ego’ but you’re still the same person you were when you were being totes amazeballs, you’re just being less totes amazeballs right now.
Use your time off from being super to focus on passion projects, goals and ideas, to put new exciting things into motion and to get some well-deserved rest. That way you will become ‘super you’ again before you know it, without trying to force it. You can’t just decide you’re going to the best version of yourself starting tomorrow. It doesn’t work like that.
You may be wondering: Who the heck is talking to me? Who’s used the word ‘super’ so many times that it looks like gibberish? And why are they on Ella’s blog?
As far as Ella’s readership is concerned, I am known as ‘M’, her boyfriend. The reason you’re reading this post in my words and not hers, is because I gave her this same advice the other day after she worried about not feeling like Superella at the moment (a farfetched notion of course).
My words of counsel can be paraphrased as: You can’t be ON all the time. You’d go crazy. So for all the times you don’t feel as motivated or busy as you did last year, or last week or 20 minutes ago, just find different ways to be fantastic, it doesn’t matter if it’s on a smaller scale. Take pride in the little things, you never know the impact you’re having on others just by being you.
“Most importantly remind yourself of how God sees you, His Wonderfully and Fearfully made child.” ~Ella
P.S. I’m trying out a few superhero names, what’s better? Mattman vs. Supermatt
