I’m an English and Drama student so I read A LOT. Maybe not as much as I’m supposed to (shout out to Spark Notes) but still, a lot. Whilst most of the set texts are interesting, most aren’t what I’d really love to be reading right now and there really isn’t much time left over for reading for pleasure. Christmas holidays are approaching and while in reality I know I’ll be doing prep reading for my modules next year, I’d like to take a few minutes to imagine myself tucked up in cosy socks, a cup of tea in arms reach, enjoying a gripping read.
My Christmas reading wish list…
The Sellout, Paul Beatty
‘A biting satire about a young man’s isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, it challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality’.
The Small Backs of Children, Lidia Yuknavitch
‘A masterful literary talent explores the treacherous, often violent borders between war and sex, love and art. With the flash of a camera, one girl’s life is shattered, and a host of others altered forever.’
Small great things, Jodi Picoult
‘With incredible empathy, intelligence, and candor, Jodi Picoult tackles race, privilege, prejudice, justice, and compassion—and doesn’t offer easy answers.’
The Light Between Oceans, M.L. Stedman
‘We are swept into a story about extraordinarily compelling characters seeking to find their North Star in a world where there is no right answer, where justice for one person is another’s tragic loss.’
Let me know if you’re keen to read any of the above, or if you have, whether you’d recommend!
What will you be reading over the holidays?
